What is radical witchcraft? It is a witchcraft that creates new and better worlds – not just for the individual, but for the collective. “Radical” is defined as both “relating to or affecting the fundamental nature of something” and “advocating or based on thorough or complete political or social change; representing or supporting an extreme or progressive section of a political party.” Radical Witchcraft then seeks to shift the foundations upon which society is built, and create something better. It is visionary, it is active.
Radical Witchcraft doesn’t have to come from any one particular tradition – as a magazine we seek to highlight creators of many faith backgrounds, including atheism.
The Radical Witchcraft Magazine is currently seeking submissions of spells, essays, and artwork that weave magic into radical movements. These can (and should!) be personal reflections on your own spiritual path, and how that path strengthens your activism.
Seethe Witch Press is particularly interested in publishing stories, spells, and artwork from people who don’t have as much access to traditional publishing: aka, BIPOC, Trans, and Queer folks to the front.
This is the first issue of what will become an annual project, and we are looking for long-form essays, short spells, and artwork to go with the work that has already been commissioned.
There are 3 types of work we are currently seeking.
Between 1,000-4,000 words
These are deep dives into radical witchcraft practice. These can be both theoretical and practical. These can also be longform personal stories about the intersection of magic, identity, politics, and theory.
An original work! This does not need to be completed by the submission deadline – instead, please submit a link to an online portfolio and we can work together from there. Please be aware that if we are able to go to print, we’ll likely be printing in black+white or monochrome.
1,000 words or under
These are bite-sized spells, extremely practical in nature. This is something that someone reading the zine could look at and incorporate into their own practice. These are like recipes for radical witchcraft.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
For PROSE Submissions:
Longform Essays will be accepted in pitch form (aka you don’t have to have the full piece written before submitting). If you are submitting a longform essay, you can also submit a small spell.
Small Spells should be submitted in full (aka already written). You can submit a maximum of 3 small spells.
For ARTWORK submissions:
Please email an outline of a couple of ideas/concepts, as well as a link to your portfolio (website, Instagram, tumblr – wherever that’s housed).
